Section 11.14: The Education Committee shall foster the in-depth study of The Urantia Book by various means, including but not limited to sponsoring gatherings of students and by providing study resources centered on universe educational ideals of encouraging the development of student-teachers.
Members of the Committee:
Lara Amyx has been involved in the Urantia community for over twenty years, originally finding the book sitting atop the tank of a toilet at a friend’s
father’s house when she was 22. She has been Conference Chair for the Florida Students of The Urantia Book annual gatherings for the last six years, and was also Secretary for FSUB. Lara is currently an administrator with the Urantia University. She
is married to Daniel Amyx, another active reader, and they own and operate two optical shops on the Treasure Coast of Florida. Not only are they growing their businesses, but they are using them in personal ministry.
I was introduced to The Urantia Book six weeks after marriage to Bill Beasley and I have been an avid reader ever since then. I am a member of The Urantia Book Fellowship and Urantia Association International and am a member of the fellowship education and the UAI leadership symposium committees.
My service activities include the Mathew Project Board for Urantia Foundation; Founding member of Florida Students of the Urantia Book; member of the F.S.U.B. Executive Board in several capacities for ten years; Conference Chairperson; facilitator of worship services, retreats, workshops, and skits; editor of newsletters; study group host for 25 years; and I travel the US visiting and instigating study group activities.
My husband and I live in Brando, Florida (Tampa Bay area) and have four adult children and three grandchildren.
I was born and raised in Switzerland. I completed my Master's and PhD work both in Europe and the USA in the Social Sciences/Sociology of Knowledge. I did further graduate work in foreign language instruction. I have a profound love of learning and teaching and have been an educator for over 30 years.
I was introduced to The Urantia Book in 2002 and have been reading it since then. The teachings in The Urantia Book immediately resonated with the spiritual truths and philosophical insights I gained in my life long searching of and communing with the Father. I joined the local UB study group in 2004 and the Fellowship Education Committee in 2007. My husband Kosta and I live the life of pioneer immigrants on a homestead near Santa Fe NM where we built our own home and raised a multiracial family.

I was introduced to The Urantia Book by my cousin Mark in 1974. Shortly after, Mark, his wife Dale, my husband, Avi, and I formed a small study group. A few years later, I joined the Connecticut Society and later became one of the founding members of the Urantia Book Society of Greater New York. Over the years, I held various positions in societies and have been involved in planning and implementing regional and general conferences, co-chairing IC 2005. In 1994, I was elected to the General Council and in 2009 I was elected to chair the Education Committee.

I was reared a Jew, became an agnostic, then a yogi—almost a swami. A whole-hearted search for Truth led me to an inner revelation of God’s love, accompanied by the message that I would be led to further truth. Three weeks later, I found The Urantia Book, This was in 1977. I am active in my local Methodist Church, where I teach Sunday School to adults and children, and occasionally preach sermons.

Since I grew up with parents who were members of the Forum, Alvin and Lucile Kulieke, it's hard to put a date on my first association with the Urantia movement, though since I went to meetings and presentations in my incubative state, I've always said that I had a womb with a view.
I joined the Urantia Brotherhood in 1973 and have been active in First Urantia Society (Chicago), the direct descendant of the Forum. I have served as its president several times, and as its TDA delegate or alternte at many TDA's.
Among other activities, I have been a member of the Domestic Extension Committee (now the Outreach Committee), creating the original study group data base and the Society Conclave, and I was a member of the Publications Committee.
Professionally, I have spent most of my life as an English and music teacher, and now I consult and tutor in the education field. I live in Lincolnshire, IL, with my wife Marilynn, and I have three children and two grandchildren.

I began reading The Urantia Book in 1972, a little bit after I met my husband David. His father and grandfather had been involved with the Seventy and Forum for many years and were all avid readers of the book. I grew up as a practicing Christian Scientist but would not consider my family to be religious. My dad, born in Italy was Catholic, and for him education was his life long joy. Although I wasn't searching for a new "religion," I began reading The Urantia Book and have been reading it ever since.
I live in Lincolnshire Illinois with my husband David, Ellen (my grown daughter) and her husband Dan, and assorted pets (four dogs, three cats, and two goldfish). I liken us to an animal shelter. I have a daughter Lauren (34 years) who works with my company Pathways Learning Group, a son Brian (28) who is married to Danielle, the parents of Ella and brother/sister to be.
Professionally, I have worked as a research and evaluator for a number of school districts, including 15 years in a high school district in northwest Illinois. I am a partner in two educational consulting companies – Gains Education Group and Pathways Learning Group which keep me busy.
I have had the great opportunity to be involved with Urantia organizations since the mid- seventies. I was, and still am a member of First Society serving on the governing committee for many years. In 1987, I was elected to the General Council of Urantia Brotherhood/Fellowship where I served 18 years.. I became an associate trustee of Urantia Foundation about 6 years ago and now serve as a trustee of Urantia Foundation.
A student of The Urantia Book since late 1960s, Peter has been a General Councilor and Chair of the Fraternal Relations (now Interfaith) Committee. After a 20-year career in public education he turned to interfaith work and currently serves as a consultant for higher education religious life programs. Peter holds an Ed.D. degree from Columbia University.
Barbara Newsom started reading The Urantia Book with her parents in a study group near Wichita, Kansas, in 1965 and has attended study groups ever since. A lifelong Christian, she is also a Stephen Minister and supports interfaith programs.
She has participated in Education Committee study sessions since 1972, and became an adjunct member of the education committee in 2008. Serving as program chair for the 2009 Summer Study Session was a highlight. “Everyone worked so well together,” she says. “Faculty and participants are reaching new levels of maturity and excellence each year.”
She moved to Chicago in 1975 and worked at the office of Urantia Brotherhood (now The Urantia Book Fellowship) and for Urantia Foundation. Within the Fellowship, she served on the General Council, Executive Committee, and Special Projects Committee. She also volunteers for Urantia Association International and The Urantia Book Historical Society.
Barbara especially enjoys integrating the teachings of The Urantia Book with all aspects of her life. “These teachings truly expand one’s cosmic consciousness and enhance spiritual perception,” she believes. “The timeless truths of loving God and serving our brothers and sisters can be lived every moment of every day.”
- Charles Laurence Olivea

I have been a member of the Education Committee since the late 1990s. I have dedicated myself to the mission of doing my best to advance the nature of voluntary study within the Fellowship. Hence, my personal motive for joining and remaining with the Committee. I support the Committee's many goals of reaching out educationally to our community's readers and students. More broadly speaking, I serve at the pleasure of the Father and work in service with the Supreme.
I began reading and studying the teachings of The Urantia Book in 1975 and I have been attending study groups and conferences ever since. I have always believed in continuing education and became involved with the education committee back in the 90’s.
